From Shaw —
January 21, 2015 is the 100th day since the opening of Seattle Iyengar Yoga Studio. It is also the 154th day after our beloved Guruji, B.K.S. Iyengar’s passing. As the owner of the studio, it finally feels right to pause and reflect upon how this studio has slowly grown into a space for the Iyengar Yoga community in the Greater Seattle area. The “why are we here” mission statements on our website continue to crystalize day after day. Every time when the studio opens its door to our students, it reaffirms our commitment to make the studio a “community studio” for the practice and study of yoga, rather than a place to “do yoga.”
Even before the Grand Opening on October 13, 2014, the studio was blessed with help and support from the community. The studio location was a deliberate choice as I envisioned it to be an active participant in other local businesses, in a vibrant small business neighborhood of Ballard. We have had students from our neighbor upstairs, the Kickin’ Boot and our next-door neighbor Miew Foods will provide our students with some healthy vegetarian Indian samplers in the near future. We also started a studio tradition of a monthly community class to generate monetary contributions to worthy charitable causes.
The transformation of the interior space runs parallel with the solid growing of our student base. From the very beginning, before the walls were up, I wanted the studio to be a welcoming and safe environment to practice Iyengar Yoga. I hoped for a psychological space where we would feel connected to the source of Iyengar Yoga and its practitioners. In line with the above vision and hopes, the studio continues to do away with the corporate consumer model which runs rampant in the yoga business in many cities including Seattle. Quality yoga instructions and connecting to one another in Iyengar Yoga are the studio’s first priority. What I acquire for the studio, either equipment or software, has the primary goal to further the rich method of Iyengar Yoga and to serve our community. Our teachers, all Certified Iyengar Yoga instructors, have shown their commitment to the community of teachers and students. There is not a single day that goes by without me feeling blessed with such a great team of teachers and students at Seattle Iyengar Yoga Studio.
Yoga is more than fitness as the studio is more than just a business. It is a lifestyle that commits to holistic well-being. I thank you for your support for the past (almost) 100 days and I look forward to continue on this wonderful journey with you and more of you!
